Israel offers Golden Horizon ALBM for Sukhoi Su-30MKI and partnership in Long Range Air Defense domain

According to media reports, in an already strong defence relationship, Israel has exclusively offered the Golden Horizon ALBM, an air-launched ballistic missile, to India, which is being pitched to fit on the Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet. This historic offer will make India the first and only country in the world to have such a strategic capability, which will be a major milestone in India-Israel defence relations. The missile, which has an estimated range of around 800 kilometers, is destined fundamentally change the strike capabilities of India as it operates in a two-front hostile situation.

Golden Horizon ALBM is an advanced air-launched ballistic missile system that incorporates the strategic capability of ballistic missiles with the tactical capabilities of air platforms. As opposed to the conventional cruise-missiles which travel to the ground at lower altitudes and are known to travel predictably, ballistic missiles travel on high arc trajectories that make them much more difficult to track and shoot down. This set of capabilities, coupled with high-performance when fired from a high-performance maneuverable fighter platform such as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, provides an unprecedented strike power that is not in the possession of many air forces in the world today. Having the capability to strike targets at stand-off ranges without affecting the safety of the aircraft and its crew is a key force multiplier in favor of the Indian Air Force.

This capability has strategic consequences, especially in the complex security environment that India is in, since its major strategic challenges are China and Pakistan. The Golden Horizon ALBM would allow Indian Air Force fighter formations to destroy high-value targets deep inside the enemy territory without exposing the aircraft and aircrews to the threat of enemy long-range beyond-visual-range (BVR) fighters or modern surface-to-air missile (SAM) networks. This would be particularly useful in attacking Chinese HQ-9 SAM batteries and growing air defense systems in Pakistan on the Himalayan fronts that are contested, giving India options that are credible deterrence on the first day of a possible war.

The Golden Horizon ALBM’s technical specifications suit it especially well to the Sukhoi Su-30MKI platform. It is estimated that the missile has a range of 800 kilometers, enabling it to attack targets that most enemy air defense systems can never reach, even when staying within the range of fighter formations of India. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI has advanced avionics, electronic warfare capabilities, and a successful combat history, which makes it the perfect platform to launch this Israeli ALBM. The integration would make use of the existing systems in the aircraft, besides providing it with a new dimension as far as strike capabilities are concerned.

The Israeli offer comes at a time when the two nations are preparing to strengthen their defence partnership to the next level, ahead of a two-day visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Israel scheduled for February 25-26, 2026. The visit can be described as the second visit to Israel by PM Modi since 2017 and is set to include security cooperation, trade, and collaboration in technology. Although no specific defense deals are to be concluded on this visit, both parties will sign an MoU on security cooperation that would pave the way for further security cooperation.

The larger picture of the India-Israel defense relationship is also rather stunning as Israel has already signed arms contracts worth approximately $8.6 billion just a few days ago this month, and it truly makes them the largest weapons supplier to India, second only to France. Such a huge commitment comes after decades of increased defense cooperation, where India has been Israel’s largest arms buyer over the years, reaching 34% of all the arms sold across Israel in 2020-24, estimated at around $20.5 billion during these years.

The $8.6 billion weapons package is a complete package featuring various important weapon systems that complement the Golden Horizon ALBM offer. These are Rafael SPICE 1000 precision guidance bombs with a maximum range of 100 kilometers and less than 3 meters accuracy (CEP – Circular Error Probability), Elbit Systems Rampage air-to-surface missiles with a 250-kilometer range, which have already been deployed on Indian fighter planes, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) made air-LORA air-launched ballistic missiles (ALBM) with a 400-kilometer range and Rafael made Ice Breaker air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) system that provides a range of 300 kilometers on sea and on land with 24-hour weather operability.

The strategic collaboration goes further than subsequently purchasing weapons and involves collaboration in the technology development of military importance. Both countries are discussing possibilities regarding joint development projects in the anti-ballistic missile defense & laser weapons, long-range stand-off weapons, and unmanned platforms arena. Israel has agreed to provide the latest defence technologies, such as laser defence systems and stand-off capabilities, to India. Such a technology transfer would be especially useful to the Indian ‘Mission Sudarshan’, which is set to ensure the safety of the Indian hinterland against the long-range enemy missiles.

The anti-ballistic missile defense partnership represents the ever-growing bilateral relationship between the two countries. Israel’s tested defense capabilities, such as Arrow (long-range), David Sling (medium-range), and Iron Dome (short-range), can provide India with the best technologies of world-class air defense systems. Collective development would involve modifying the systems to the needs of India, but at the same time, be able to develop local capabilities by transferring the technology and co-production agreements.

The timing of these developments reflects both strategic necessity and technological opportunity. The two front strategic challenges faced by India, with China’s rapid modernisation of its military and Pakistan’s continuing conventional and nuclear threat, call for the need to increase its deterrence options. Combined with the fleet of Su-30MKIs, the Golden Horizon ALBM capability will allow India to have a credible strike capability capable of attacking the adversary’s strategic assets at the lowest risk to the aircraft and personnel.

The economic and industrial advantages of this increased defense collaboration go beyond short-term military potential. The joint venture has been boosting several segments of the Indian defense industrial foundation, such as precision manufacturing, guidance, propulsion, and electronic warfare. The resultant development has spillovers to civilian industries, and it enhances the status of India as a world defense technology provider. Through a focus on indigenous content, as was experienced in earlier Israeli-Indian defense projects, the long-term sustainability and low reliance on foreign suppliers are guaranteed.
